Thinkubator: Build a new business with zero overhead!

August 21, 2009

An interesting thing happened at thinkspace a few weeks ago.  I was talking in front of one of Paul Anderson’s ProLango Career Seminars and happened to meet a person in that group.  We had a very casual conversation in the elevator and struck a common connection as she was talking about SQL Server.  I’m a ex-SQL junkie, so naturally we had nice conversation and decided to meet up and talk more later.  To make a long story short, we ended up having a short meeting in my office, which led to writing a business plan and within three weeks of having an elevator conversation we had a signed our first client to a multi-month consulting contract!
This is really a unique story, because it goes to show you that during this recession it’s things like that which make things special.  While I can’t say what will happen next with this business idea, I certainly think it’s got a chance.
After reflecting back on what had transpired, I had realized that thinkspace had just incubated a new business doing so with zero overhead.  This is the birth of a new program called “Thinkubator”.
The requirements of the program:

  • You must be unemployed.
  • You must be attending a ProLango Career Seminar.
  • The business idea, product or service, must have a cash conversion cycle of 60 days or less.
  • This idea does not require a large cash investment.
  • This can not be a MLM idea.
  • This can not rely on advertising revenue.
Whoever’s idea is picked will be allowed to plan and execute their idea inside thinkspace for two months free of charge.  We will meet at minimum of twice a month with this person to review their ideas.  The purpose of this is to help a person that is thinking of starting their own business work through that process in a community of entrepreneurs instead of being alone in their home.  The other benefit is to have people to bounce their ideas off of and perhaps even leverage the expertise of the community to jump start their idea.
